The July 2011 Newsletter from the 56th Fighter Group website

Welcome to the latest newsletter from www.56thfightergroup.co.uk.
It's been a while since the last newsletter, mainly due to me having a very hectic work schedule over the first half of the year. However, this has eased off now and I'm able to devote some extra time to the website.

Those of you who visit the site regularly will have noticed three new pages.
The P-47 Thunderbolt page was the first to be added. This contains details about the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, along with a series of "first impressions" of the aircraft from 56th FG pilots. Some statistical data rounds off the page.

Two new photo albums have been added. A set of photos taken at the Dayton reunion in 2006 was sent in by Bob Trimnell, and I received a set of George Nunemacher's photos from Sam Sox Jnr.

Two fine additions to the site as I'm sure you'll agree and thanks to Bob, George, and Sam for making them available.

Reunion photos are expecially welcome, and if you have attended a reunion in the past and have any photographs you would like to share then please CONTACT US.

There have been a number of veteran's families making contact recently. Some of them initially posted in the guestbook and others contacted the site directly, and it's given me great pleasure to be able to supply these families with details of their relatives' service and photographs. The vast majority of these photos have never been seen by the families and its wonderfull to be able to contribute to their understanding of that time in our history. In one particular case, the families of three pilots who were best friends while serving with the 56th are in contact now for the first time, and that friendship continues through the generations.

Sadly, news has reached us recently of the passing of Stuart Getz 61st FS, ( who adopted the name Haynesworth post war), and Bill Billings of the 62nd FS. Bill was a great friend of the Halesworth Museum and with his help the 56th FG Memorial there became a reality, and he will be sadly missed.

On a brighter note, Boleslaw "Mike" Gladych celebrated his 101st birthday on May 17th in fine style and is looking younger with every passing year. Many congratulations go to Mike from everybody associated with the 56th.

The Halesworth Airfield Memorial Museum has been donated extra display space recently, and this is being prepared over the summer. During the winter the displays will be reorganised and when the museum reopens in Spring 2012 it will be joined by the 489th Bombardment Group collection bringing all the groups that served at Station 365 Halesworth together in one museum for the first time. Exciting times for all concerned and in these uncertain economic times the news of a museum expanding is particularly welcome.

The museum at Boxted has also opened and is now open the public on the last Sunday of each month. While any group that establishes a museum is to be congratulated and encouraged for playing its part in ensuring that the memory of those who served continues, it is unfortunate that the Boxted museum displays related to the 56th Fighter Group suffer from poor grammar and bad research and it is to be hoped that this is corrected in the near future. One display actually states that the 56th didn't fly combat missions while based at Horsham (???), while the memorial contains many errors and ommissions which should be addressed as soon as possible.

June saw the visit to the UK of 61st FS CO Donavon Smith's daughter Patricia, and it was a great pleasure to welcome her on this side of "The Pond". Patricia followed closely in her father's footsteps with visits to both the 56th FG museum at Halesworth and "The Wheelhouse" at Boxted. It was a pleasure to meet up with Pat again and show her around, and the same warm welcome is guaranteed to any and all veterans and veterans' families who find themselves vacationing in the UK. Anybody planning a vacation who would like more information regarding visiting the sites of the airfields which The Wolfpack operated from, please CONTACT US.

Work continues “behind the scenes” on additions to the 56th Fighter Group website and general research into the 56th FG and personnel who served, and these additions will be announced as and when they “go live”. If you have any photographs of reunions or anything else 56th FG related we would love to hear from  you. CONTACT US HERE. All material sent to this website is passed on to the 56th Fighter Group museum at Halesworth.

If you have any items you would like to donate to the museum that it isn't possible to display on the website, these can be sent to the museum directly. Buzz Took, as many of you will know, is the American Liaison at the museum and can be contacted either via the 56th FG website web@56thfightergroup.co.uk or directly at buzztook.56thfguk@btinternet.com.

The Timeless Voices series of interviews are firmly established as one of the highlights of the 56th FG website and there is always room for more. Please, if you are a veteran not only of the 56th FG but of any branch of the USAF, don't let your story go untold. The people at EAA OSHKOSH would love to hear from you and arrange to record your experiences.

Thank you for the support and encouragement I continue to receive on a regular basis.

Until next time... Cave Tonitrum!
